revisiting a study
i always love it when i stumble upon a master painter’s
multiple study of the same subject
my favorite artist, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres
has done many of these
this is one of my favorites
“Paolo and Francesca” ca. 1814-1819

it is like one of those puzzles where you have to find the differences
i painted a small paper study over a year ago
titled, “an unseen full circle”
this piece was painted in the turquoise vintage dress series
for me, this one was different than all of the others
…in composition and in concept
without giving too much away,
the “unseen full circle” was about reflection
i had found unexpected clarity
after being on a multi layered journey
…asking innumerable questions,
about past, present, future
after months of searching,
a serendipitous flood of answers started to rise
thus “an unseen full circle” emerged
there has been recent interest in “an unseen full circle”
i revisited the study and photo reference
and realized the “full circle” has made another complete rotation in my life
I’ve just taken 4 weeks off from painting to reflect on the year’s past
in revisiting this study
i was moved to paint this piece in fresco
it has been an inexplicable experience
reflecting on personal growth, both technically and spiritually
