Join world renowned watercolor artist, Ali Cavanaugh, for a four-day immersive workshop designed to help artists strengthen their personal artistic voice while exploring the expressive possibilities of watercolor on Aquabord.

This intensive workshop blends mentorship, technical instruction, and creative exploration in a supportive group environment. Through demonstrations, one-on-one guidance, group discussions, and hands-on painting sessions, participants will deepen their understanding of how personal imagery, composition, and color choices contribute to a distinct artistic voice.

Before the workshop, participants will be invited to submit images of their recent work along with personal goals and creative challenges. These materials will serve as a starting point for thoughtful group discussions about style, recurring themes, and how artists can draw from their own experiences and imagery to create meaningful work.

Throughout the week, Ali will guide students through her process of developing a painting—from selecting compelling reference images to transferring drawings onto Aquabord, planning color palettes, and building a painting through layered watercolor techniques. Participants will learn how to approach Aquabord with confidence, including strategies for color mixing, value control, and surface preparation.

The workshop will also include photography sessions in natural light, helping artists learn how to create reference images that translate into strong paintings. Students will photograph each other and explore ways to capture authentic expressions, light effects, and inspiration from the surrounding environment.

During dedicated painting sessions, Ali will work alongside participants, offering individualized instruction and mentorship in a collaborative setting where the entire group benefits from shared feedback and discussion.

The final day will focus on experimentation with modern watercolor surfaces and materials, giving artists the opportunity to explore new tools and techniques using products from QoR and Golden Artist Colors.

Additional highlights include group meals, a creative walk and photography session at Berkeley Park, and a casual open-studio reception where participants will share their work with local artists.

Workshop Dates:
